“Hey, hey! What's this I see? I thought this was a party. LET'S DANCE!”  Ren in Footloose 1984

Hello my dancers and welcome to another edition of QCDQ updates and a few of my thoughts for the month.  I hope this letter finds all of you well and in good health and good fortune.  May was a wonderful month filled with loads of fun QCDQ dancing, games, friends and good times and, as a result, it has flown by!  To those of you that are new to the family, “Welcome!”, and we hope that you have finally found a place have fun while you exercise.  To those of you that are long-lost QCDQ jammers, we still miss you and think about you and wonder, “Hmm, I wonder where so-and-so is? I haven’t seen him/her in ages…”  To those of you that are regularly blessing us with your frequent attendance, we LOOOOOOVE it and please believe me when I say that class wouldn’t be the same without you!  We hope that you are all enjoying yourself as much as we do in class, and we hope to be continually graced by your presence!  Queen City Dancing Queen is all about keeping exercise fun and making sure that every class is packed with the BEST music, HOT dance moves and EXCEPTIONAL instruction so that it feels just like a PARTY.  If we can provide this, we hope that you’ll in turn let loose, have fun and while your at it get and/or stay in shape!  There’s a ton going on in June so be sure to print the June Calendar, so you can post it on your fridge and make plans to dance with us!

Other Tidbits

Song Bingo..Song Bingo was soooo fun!  We had a lot of people playing and I think that it certainly motivated many of you to come to class often!  I know that some of you attended 17, 18, 19 and even 20 classes in the month!  So many of you got more than one bingo and some of you even filled the whole board.  That is so awesome!  Don’t forget to turn in your bingo cards by June 6th!!!  Winners will be announced by June 13th.

Another Charlotte Zumba class for ya!  Did you know that there is another uptown Charlotte option for you QCDQ jammers?  Demetria has started up a class at her church in Wilmore and she has been gettin’ things HOT on Thursday nights in Charlotte. I know she would love it if you’d go and jam with her!  The church is at 500 West Park Ave and you can park in the fenced area behind the church.  By the way, check the June calendar, this class won’t be meeting on June 18th due to their VBS.

FREE Demo class at NYC Dance & Tumble in Concord on June 16th!  Kyle Evans, the newest addition to the QCDQ instructor team, will be leading a class at NYC Dance & Tumble beginning on June 16th from 7:15-8:15!  Since this is the first class at this location, class is FREE this evening although donations for Fitness for Everyone will be accepted.  Pending interest in this location, we hope to continue this as a weekly class for a long time to come.

Morning DanceOut for Gastonia on June 16th.  We are going to pilot a morning class at Armstrong Athletic Club in Gastonia with Lisa.  Lisa is off for the summer since she is a teacher, and wants you to come and dance with her!!!  The first class will be June 16th at 9:30 am.   There will be specials on class cards on June 16th, so make sure you don’t miss out!!!  We will need at least 10 participants to keep the class going, so please come out and show your support for the class!  Let me know if you have any questions about it.  Regular punch cards or drop-in fees apply.

First in Flight Zumba Class Change in Gastonia beginning June 16th.  Due to several requests to make  another night available at First in Flight, we decided to move the 7:00 Wednesday Zumba at First in Flight to Tuesday nights.  This change will take effect on June 16th.  For the next 2 weeks, keep on dancing with Arleen on Wednesday nights!  The 6:00 DanceOut! Class will remain unaffected by this change.  Print the June Calendar to make sure you are on the same page.

Dance Specialties Class Change beginning June 18th.  It is much to my dismay that I must inform you that we have to leave Dance Specialties due to unforeseen and unchangeable scheduling conflicts with the studio.  The last day that we will be able to have class there is on June 18th.  We are currently looking for a space in Belmont or Mt Holly that would be able to host us on a Thursday night at about the same time, but there is a possibility that we might have to change nights and/or times if we want to keep the weekly East Gaston DanceOut class going.  If you know of an open space, let us know.  This could be at a school, lodge, gym, dance studio, cafeteria, etc.  Any open space with an electrical outlet is all we need.

Master Jam Session on June 20th in Dilworth!  All QCDQ participants are invited to a Master Jam Session with Angie and Sara on June 20th from 9-10:30 am at Tom Sykes Recreation Center in Dilworth.  The Master Jam Session will be a 90 minute heart-racin’, booty shakin’, this-is-too-fun-to-be-considered-exercise good time!  We will bust out some old favorites and also give you some FRESH stuff and some BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW stuff too!  We hope you will join us for this special class. The cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door.  Sorry, no punch cards for this special 90 minute class.  Click here to get your ticket for the Master Jam Session!

Make it a Party! Instructor Workshop on June 20th in Dilworth.  After the Master Jam Session on June 20th, Queen City Dancing Queen will be presenting the “Make it a Party!” Instructor Workshop  from 10:30-4:00.  The workshop is for current or aspiring instructors to develop teaching skills that create an inviting, super fun, let-loose atmosphere.  Many participants have also inquired about the workshop; Whether or not you want to become an instructor, you are guaranteed a good time and you might just gain enough confidence to venture to the front of the class as  a Jam Crew member.  Online registration is now open.  For more information, click here, and be sure to register before June 13th to take advantage of the early bird price of $75.  Plus, the workshop price includes the Master Jam Session with Angie and Sara.

Dancin’ through the Decades Party June 25th. The Gonna Make You Sweat Party at Tom Sykes Rec Ctr on May 29 was an ABSOLUTE blast.  It was like totally RADICAL!!!  Not only did we sweat like crazy with an awesome lineup of songs-including a Booty Battle- everyone looked amazing!  If you missed it, don’t worry there is another opportunity to dress up in June!  On June 25th at the ARC in Gastonia, we will be having a Dancing through the Decades Party for the 7:40 DanceOut class.  You can come dressed up in the attire, accessories and/or hairstyle of any decade you wish.  Of course, you don’t have to dress up, but anyone that does will be entered in a drawing for Free Stuff.  So, go ahead and start getting your costumes ready!  It is going to be a blast!  There is no special charge for this class.  Regular punch cards or drop-in fee applies.

Asana Activewear Zumbathon on June 27th. On June 27th, there will be a Zumbathon at Asana Activewear in SouthPark from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, organized by our very own Sara!  The cost of registration is $15 and all participants will receive an Asana Drawstring Backpack, a water bottle and discounts to Asana Activewear, not to mention 90 minutes of fabulous Zumba fun with Sara and 2 other Charlotte-area Zumba instructors, Sammi and Jonathan.  Plus, and this is the best part, proceeds will be going to FITNESS FOR EVERYONE, QCDQ’s program to help people in need of a healthy, active lifestyle in these tough economic times.  To register for this awesome event, please go to Asana’s website.

Open Call Auditions for Instructors June 27th.  You might have noticed we are expanding!  As more and more people see what we are doing, more people are wanting our classes in new areas of the Charlotte and Greater Charlotte area.  This means we are in need of instructors!  To see who is up for the challenge of becoming an instructor for one of the hottest fitness companies around, we will have Open Call Auditions on June 27 from 12-6 at Tom Sykes Recreation Center. We have a limited # of positions available for both experienced instructors and for instructors in need of training.  Interested applicants should fill out the Instructor Application and contact Angie to schedule their audition time.

Good things for Sara.  All of you know Sara Bremer knows how to rock it and there are several reasons to give her a pat on the back this month.  Let us count the ways...

· Sara has been an amazing addition to the QCDQ team and not only brings her fabulous energy to the classes but also her sweet and caring personality.  She really does embody the QCDQ message that exercise should be FUN!  For all of her efforts and leadership within QCDQ, she has recently been appointed as a Head Instructor for QCDQ.  This means that she’ll be helping me as we expand and continuing to bop around various locations and keeping things as HOT as possible for all of you QCDQ jammers.  Don’t hesitate to approach her about any questions/concerns you have.

· Also, in May, Sara represented QCDQ for the launch of Zumba in Grand Cayman Island! She spent 4 days training with International Zumba Educator and host of the 2008 Zumba DVD's Tanya Beardsley. While on the island she did a choeography workshop, a master class and got certified in Zumba Level 2 where she learned more about belly dancing, flamenco, samba and tango. She also got the chance to work on her reggeaton with one of Grand Cayman’s best instructors and swapped choreography with other US Zumba instructors. They LOVED "Beware of the Boys", "Alguien" and "Calimeño".   Watch out for new routines and music from Sara's Grand Cayman trip like "The Way She Moves" by Zion, "Dance de Creu", "Mi Chica Sexy" by Alberto Flash, "Max it Up" by Destra Garcia and "Dulce Nina" by Kumbia Kings.

· Finally, Sara was chosen as Asana Activewear´s Hero of the Month.  Asana is an upscale fitness clothing boutique in Charlotte and every month they choose someone who is making a difference in the community with their fitness instruction.  She is currently being featured on the website with some really nice pics in her Asana Activewear and a nice article.  Please check out the profile and if you feel inclined, leave her a nice comment to tell others about your experience with Sara and/or QCDQ classes in general.

Fitness for Everyone.  I want to remind everyone about our program Fitness for Everyone. We want everyone to be able to pursue a healthy and happy active lifestyle through our classes no matter what your financial circumstances might be.  In other words, being short on cash is not an excuse to not come to class.  Please don’t feel bad about asking for help.  We want you to come to class and dance with us!  Remember, there are lots of options for you whether you need a little help or a lot of help.  All you have to do is say the word.  Here is the form to request assistance.  Thank you everyone for your donations and continuing to support this program. For more information, click here.

Request regarding non-participating guests.  We want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in class at all times, and I know that for some of you the only reason that you can let loose and just have fun is because you know no one is watching you.  This dynamic changes when there are people that come to class that don’t participate and just watch class.  I want everyone to feel completely comfortable and be able to express yourself freely, especially since you are paying for class. Therefore, I would like to request that for the sake of your fellow participants please have any guests that are not taking class to wait for you in an area outside of where we are dancing.  Better yet, encourage your guest to do the class with us! Thank you very much for understanding this sensitive situation.

Other Tidbits

1. Thanks to the Firemen at FS9!  Thanks to the Firemen at Fire Station #9 for helping us out with the tables and chairs on Mondays and Thursdays.  We love it when you come and dance with us too!  In appreciation of the firemen, Jenny Noto (AKA J-No) will be bringing them lasagna for dinner.  Isn’t that sweet?  This is why I love you guys so much.

2. Winner of the March QCDQ Photo Contest is Robin Owens! She won a 5 class card!  Crystal Dockery and Jenny Noto each won a Free class pass for their winning photos.  Since many of the winning photos were submitted by instructors, these free classes will be donated to Fitness for Everyone. Thanks to everyone for submitting your photos!  We have a ton of awesome pics now for our Facebook group page.  Click here to view the winning pics. To see all of our awesome pics, login or sign up for Facebook and join our group.

3. Yay for Sue!  Sue is doing awesome a few weeks out from her surgery.  Thank you to everyone for all of your sweet words and for supporting her.

I can’t say enough how happy I am to lead such an awesome group of people in leading a healthy, active lifestyle.  I love you all!!!
