The more you do this, the easier and the harder it gets. Adapted from Jani Roberts at the 2009 Zumba Convention
|
|
Hello Everyone! Welcome to another fabulous edition of the "Tidbits" e-newsletter, filled with the very latest in Queen City Dancing Queen news and events, plus my thoughts on dancing, enjoying life, and being healthy. As you may have heard, a huge group of QCDQ instructors went to the international Zumba Instructor Convention from Sept. 3-6. We had a great time- learned a lot, played a little and danced a TON!! Being at the convention, I was reminded of what it feels like to be a participant in a class with a new choreography, new teaching styles and new dance moves. I first had this realization at the Zumba Toning workshop on Friday. There were moves were so new and challenging that I couldn't fully work them and as a result, I had trouble giving the moves my full energy. I must not have been the only like this because one of the presenters Jani Roberts concluded the day with a message that went something like this, "The more you do this, the easier and the harder it gets". This totally made sense to me and it reminded me of how it must feel to be a new participant with QCDQ.
To explain, let's follow the imaginary QCDQ path of a made-up participant who we will call "Fancy". Let's say Fancy comes to class for the first time. After class her comment to me is "It was fun, but it was a little hard to follow all the steps." In translation: The steps, moves or choreography were perceived as hard, but the workout was perceived as relatively easy. Otherwise she would have said, "It kicked my butt! I don't think I'll be able to walk tomorrow." Okay, so Fancy comes back to class for a few more weeks and then after class one day, she comments, "You kicked our butts today, Angie! Whew! I needed that!" In reality I had done mostly the same songs that I had done on Fancy's first day of class. The difference this time was that now that the steps were perceived as "easy", she was able to fully get into the songs, using energy, full range of motion, tight core, muscles engaged, and hence, the workout for her was "harder".
The lesson here I guess is twofold.
Lesson #1 If you area new QCDQ-er, hold on, keep coming to class, and don't give up because the moves will get "easier". If you want some help before or after class, feel free to ask an instructor or Jam Crew member to show you how to do a certain step. We will be happy to help you on your way.
Lesson#2 If you area long-time QCDQ-er, if you want to kick it up a notch, the power to increase your workout intensity (in other words, make it "harder) lies in your hands.
So, with dancing (and with many other things in life if I might add), you will see that the more you do it, the easier and the harder it gets.
Class Updates
What's all the Ruckus about? We have 2 new class locations for Concord and Harrisburg- the Ruckus House! Nicole Mattern will be teaching Zumba on Mondays and DanceOut! on Thursdays at 6:30 PM at the Ruckus House in Concord. It is located in the Moss Creek Subdivision (Off Hwy 73- not far from our original location of Fire Station 9).And for those of you who jam with Demetria Brittingham on Saturday mornings, her class is now at the Ruckus House in Harrisburg. It's about 2 minutes north of the old location KOPA (located past the Bloom shopping center). We're very excited about these new locations and hope to see you all there every week! Thanks to everyone who came out to the "New Location Celebrations" this past week and thank you to Ruckus House for providing us with the new fabulous class venues!
New Class in Cramerton! Gina Moody had her first Cramerton DanceOut last week and we had a full house. Thanks to everyone who came out! We hope to see all of you on a weekly basis!! For those of you that didn't make it, check it out! The location is very convenient.. (for those teachers out there it is right across the street from the Rader Center.) Let's get it going peeps!!!
Welcome Katherine Walker to the QCDQ instructor team! Kat has officially taken over for our beloved Urban Shimmy instructor Gaby (who is now in the Netherlands getting her PhD in Economics!) Kat took some time to formally introduce herself to the QCDQ peeps and here is what she had to say:
Hi! My name is Katherine Walker but of course you can call me Kat. I'm a navy brat and don't consider myself "from" anywhere, but my family is from Puerto Rico. While in college at Florida State University, I saw the Zumba infomercials and thought "Man that looks fun!" but I was a heavy girl so I thought I couldn't do it. In 2007, I started attending a Zumba class at my local gym and that instructor told me I had to become certified. I've loved teaching Zumba ever since! I've never been formally trained in dance, but Latin music is in my blood! It's been an incredible journey. Being a nurse brought me to Charlotte but the incredible people at QCDQ kept me here! If you'd like to drop me a line, you can email me at kat@queencitydancingqueen.com.
Dance Action needed!!! Guys and girls- While you know we love to jam with you week in and week out whether there are 5, 10, 20, 30 or 60 people there, it's no secret that the party really gets rockin' the more of you that are there! We want to keep all of our classes on the schedule, but we also have to look at the demand and make decisions about our class schedule based on your feedback and also your attendance. We really need to boost attendance at 3 locations in particular- one in each of the counties we serve. These are First in Flight Gym in Gastonia, Greater Galilee Baptist Church in Charlotte and NY*C in Concord. As a special incentive, for a limited time we are going to offer a SUPER QCDQ DEAL on 5, 10 and 20 class cards at these locations. You will receive huge savings when you buy a "GOLD" class card at these locations. The "GOLD" class card will only be able to be used at the location at which it was purchased. Because these savings are so HUGE, with the Gold Card, you will not be able to receive regular Dance Fanatic or Jam Crew Rewards. Check out these huge savings:
$20 for a 5 Class Gold Card— Save $15 off regular price!!!
$40 for a 10 Class Gold Card— Save $20 off regular price!!!
$75 for a 20 Class Gold Card— Save $25 off regular price!!! (only at FIF)
We would also love to hear your feedback regarding these classes too and see what the wise QCDQ peeps can enlighten us with. The instructors for these classes are ready to dance with you, so let's figure out what we can do to make this happen. So if you have EVER attended class at any of these locations, we would like to have your feedback. Please click on the links provided to give your 2 cents.
