I’m Erica Butler and I’d rather go to a party than the gym any day of the week. For as long as I can remember, if there was music on – I was moving. I danced competitively throughout my youth and loved every minute of it. In 2003, I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill where I majored in Performance Studies and spent my time doing everything from Musicals to Improv Comedy. After I got my “real” job as the Administrative Manager for John Wieland Homes, I got out of dance and somehow managed to gain 50 lbs. I felt like I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I worked and watched TV and that’s about it.
One night at a party (see a theme here?), fellow Head Instructor Gina Moody led Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie” in the living room and Zumba just clicked with me. I took my first class the next week and lasted twenty minutes before I thought I was going to die. I left. But instead of accepting defeat – I went back. I stood in the back corner and did everything low impact. Slowly but surely, it became easier – and without fail I always had a blast.
Years later, I’ve made my way to the front and I am a now Head Instructor for Queen City DanceOut! If you’re scared of exercise like I was, give this a chance. Our classes are really a party in disguise. Who knows? You just might make your way to the front too. Read more about Erica in her Q&A
